“From an archive your lawyers were told no longer existed.”

The ballroom had become completely silent.

Alexander reached for the document, but Emily placed her hand over it.

“Not so quickly.”

His expression hardened.

“You walk into my home, interrupt my father’s announcement, and expect us to believe a document you brought from nowhere?”

Emily finally looked directly at him.

“No. I expect you to recognize the signature at the bottom.”

Alexander glanced down.

His confidence vanished.

The signature belonged to his father.

But beneath it was a second signature.

His own.

He stared at the page, searching for an explanation that refused to appear.

“I never signed this,” he said.

Emily’s expression remained unchanged.

“That is what I thought you would say.”

She closed the folder.

“Which is why I brought the original.”

Richard lowered himself into a chair.

For the first time that evening, he looked old.

Victoria pulled Alexander aside.

“We need to leave,” she whispered urgently.

But Alexander barely heard her. His eyes were fixed on Emily, who had turned toward the assembled guests.

“My father spent the last year of his life trying to prove that he had been betrayed by someone he trusted,” she announced. “He died before he could clear his name.”

She paused, allowing the words to settle.

“I didn’t come here to ask for sympathy. I came because someone in this room knows what really happened twelve years ago.”

Her gaze moved across the guests.

Then it stopped on Victoria.

The young woman’s face lost its color.

Emily noticed.

And smiled.

“Apparently,” she said quietly, “I won’t have to look very far.”

At that moment, the ballroom lights flickered.

A phone vibrated inside Richard Whitmore’s jacket.

He checked the screen, and his hand began to tremble.

The message contained only eleven words:

SHE HAS THE SECOND FILE. TELL ALEXANDER WHAT YOU DID BEFORE MIDNIGHT.

Richard looked toward his son.

Alexander was still staring at Emily.

And Emily Carter, the girl the Whitmore family believed they had erased from their history, had finally returned with a secret capable of destroying them all.
