They found the cottage two days later.

It stood on a quiet stretch of the Northern California coast, surrounded by windswept grass and tall cypress trees. The house was small, with white walls, blue shutters, and a narrow path leading toward the sea.

Alexander knocked.

No one answered.

Emily walked around the side of the building and noticed a light inside a greenhouse.

An elderly woman stood among the plants, holding a watering can.

Her hair was silver, and her face showed the passage of time. But Emily recognized her immediately.

“Mom?”

The woman dropped the watering can.

For several seconds, neither moved.

Then Eleanor Carter crossed the greenhouse and embraced her daughter.

Emily began to cry.

“I thought you were dead.”

Eleanor held her tightly.

“I know.”

“Why didn’t you come back?”

Eleanor looked toward Victoria, who stood at the doorway.

“Because I believed I was protecting both of you.”

Victoria approached slowly.

“Are you my mother?”

Eleanor’s eyes filled with tears.

“Yes.”

Victoria stared at her.

“Why did you let me believe you were gone?”

“Because the people investigating Daniel’s case had begun examining your identity. Margaret convinced me that if I remained dead on paper, you would be protected from the scandal.”

“Margaret knew you were alive?”

“Yes.”

The answer left Victoria speechless.

Eleanor invited them inside.

Over tea, she explained what had happened twelve years earlier.

She had discovered that Northbridge Capital was being used to route money from several private investment accounts. Some of the transfers were legitimate, but others had been disguised to conceal their final recipients.

Daniel Carter noticed the irregularities and asked Eleanor to verify the records.

Thomas Whitmore helped them obtain internal documents.
