“Forty years ago, I started this company with one office, three employees, and a promise to my family that we would never allow money to become more important than integrity.”
Several guests nodded appreciatively.
Richard paused.
“Unfortunately, success can make people forget the very principles that made their success possible.”
Alexander’s smile disappeared.
His father continued.
“Over the past year, I have learned things about this company that I cannot ignore. Certain decisions were made in my name without my knowledge. Certain people believed that loyalty was something they could purchase.”
Victoria tightened her grip on Alexander’s arm.
“What is he talking about?” she whispered.
“I don’t know,” Alexander replied, although his voice suggested otherwise.
Richard opened the envelope.
“Before I announce my successor, there is someone I must welcome back into this family.”
A murmur spread across the ballroom.
The double doors at the entrance slowly opened.
A woman stepped inside.
She wore a simple midnight-blue dress beneath a long charcoal coat. Her dark hair was pulled back neatly, and she carried a small leather folder under one arm. Unlike the other guests, she wore no expensive jewelry and made no effort to attract attention.
Yet the room seemed to change the moment she entered.
Richard stepped away from the podium.
His eyes filled with emotion.
“Emily,” he said softly.
Alexander went completely still.
Emily Carter.
The name had not been spoken inside the Whitmore estate for twelve years.
She was the daughter of Richard’s former business partner, Daniel Carter, who had died after being accused of financial fraud. In the aftermath of the scandal, Daniel’s company collapsed, his reputation was destroyed, and his family disappeared from the social circles they had once belonged to.
Emily had been seventeen when everything happened.
