“Your father has always been too sentimental.”

Richard’s expression hardened.

“Let’s begin.”

The meeting concerned the company’s proposed acquisition of a luxury hotel group. Under normal circumstances, Alexander would have led the negotiations.

But before the first presentation began, Margaret placed a document in front of the directors.

“I believe we should postpone the succession announcement,” she said. “The recent events have raised questions about the company’s stability.”

Alexander looked at her.

“What questions?”

“An individual with a personal grievance has made serious allegations against our organization. Investors will expect reassurance.”

“Then we should investigate the allegations.”

Margaret folded her hands.

“That would imply there is something to investigate.”

“Wouldn’t an independent audit settle the matter?”

The directors exchanged glances.

Margaret’s smile disappeared.

“An audit would be expensive and unnecessary.”

“Not if our records are accurate.”

Richard watched his son carefully.

Alexander continued.

“I propose that an independent forensic accounting firm review all transactions connected to Northbridge Capital between 2013 and 2014.”

Margaret stood abruptly.

“Absolutely not.”

The room fell silent.

Alexander looked at her.

“Why not?”

“Because those records contain confidential information belonging to former clients.”

“Then the auditors can work under a confidentiality agreement.”

Margaret turned toward Richard.

“You cannot allow this.”

Richard remained silent.

For a moment, the older woman seemed to understand that the balance of power had shifted.

She gathered her documents.

“I have another appointment.”

As she walked toward the door, Alexander spoke.

“Ms. Hale?”

She stopped.

“Did you know Daniel Carter?”

Margaret turned slowly.

“Everyone in this company knew Daniel.”

“Did you ever work with him on Northbridge Capital?”

Her expression became cold.

“Your father’s former business partner was responsible for serious financial misconduct. I would advise you not to confuse family loyalty with professional judgment.”

“That wasn’t my question.”
