Richard Whitmore was waiting in his study when Alexander arrived.

The curtains were closed, and a collection of old photographs lay across the desk. Richard looked at his son without speaking.

“Is Victoria Eleanor Carter’s daughter?” Alexander asked.

Richard lowered his head.

“Yes.”

The admission landed harder than any accusation.

“How long have you known?”

“Since she was a child.”

“And you let me become engaged to her without telling me?”

“I never intended for this to happen.”

“That isn’t an answer.”

Richard rose slowly.

“Eleanor Carter had a daughter before her marriage. Margaret Hale raised the child as her own after Eleanor disappeared from public life. The arrangement was meant to protect the girl.”

“Protect her from whom?”

Richard looked toward the window.

“From people who believed Eleanor had stolen money from them.”

Alexander struggled to understand.

“Was Victoria aware of her real mother?”

“Not when she was young. I don’t know what Margaret eventually told her.”

“Why did you keep this from me?”

“Because the truth could destroy the Hale family, the Carter family, and our company.”

Alexander laughed bitterly.

“You mean it could destroy your reputation.”

Richard did not deny it.

He explained that twelve years earlier, Thomas had discovered evidence that Margaret Hale had manipulated financial records. Rather than confront her publicly, Thomas had arranged a private meeting with Eleanor, hoping they could recover the missing money and clear Daniel Carter’s name.

But the meeting had gone wrong.

Thomas had died two days later.

Eleanor had vanished shortly afterward.

And Richard had accepted Margaret’s explanation that both events were unrelated.

“You believed her?” Alexander asked.

“I wanted to believe her. If the investigation had become public, our company would have collapsed.”

“So you protected the company.”

“I protected thousands of employees who depended on it.”
