Daniela left that night, collected by her own older brother. She did not argue. She picked up her bag and got into the car with her head down.

Days later, the family made a formal report. Not only because of the pool. Because of everything that surfaced afterwards — months of messages that showed an obsession far older and darker than one bad afternoon. A woman who had decided that if she could not have her sister’s life, her sister was not going to enjoy it in peace.

The doctors said Tomás was perfectly fine. Untouched. Lucky beyond reason.

And Amparo — the housekeeper who had gone into that water without a second of hesitation — became the quiet centre of a story people passed around the whole city.

The family offered to buy her a house. They offered a car. They offered a raise that would not have fit on any payslip.
She refused all of it.

“I didn’t jump for money,” she said, when a local reporter pushed a microphone toward her face. “I jumped because he was a baby. And because I was a mother too.”

The reporter went quiet. “You have children, Amparo?”

“I had one.” She looked straight into the camera without flinching. “One. He died fourteen years ago. He was two years old.”
And there, out loud for the first time in her life, she told it.

His name was Julián. A rainy afternoon, a driver who did not stop at the light, a mother walking on the pavement with her son in her arms. She woke up in a hospital bed and there was nothing anyone could do.

Since that day, Amparo had not held a baby.

Not until that afternoon. Not until Tomás.

“That’s why I jumped,” she said, her voice barely moving. “Because I know what it is to lose a child. And I wasn’t going to let another mother learn it. Not even a mother who never loved me.”
