Rafael Solano had come home early. A cancelled meeting, his jacket over one arm, his phone still in his hand.

The first thing he heard was his son screaming. The second was his sister-in-law.

He came out into the garden and found a scene he would never be able to unsee: his baby soaked and crying, and the housekeeper soaked too, hair stuck to her face, shoes dripping onto the tiles.

Daniela pointed at her, tears already running. “Rafael! She threw Tomás into the pool! I saw it! With my own eyes!”
The blood went straight to Rafael’s head.

“What?”

“She threw him in! I couldn’t get there in time! Your son nearly drowned!”

Amparo opened her mouth. Nothing came out.

“Amparo.” Rafael took a step toward her, and his voice was not a voice she recognised. “What happened here?”
“Señor Rafael, I—”

“Ask her!” Daniela screamed. “Ask her what she did!”

Then Rafael did something Amparo would carry for the rest of her life. He crossed the last two steps, seized her arm hard enough to leave marks, and tore the baby out of her hold.

“Eleven years in my house,” he said, shaking. “Eleven years, and you do this. Get out. Get off my property.”

Amparo staggered back. Her arm burned. Her chest was suddenly, completely empty.

She raised her face slowly. Her eyes were full, but she was not crying.

She took one breath, and spoke in a voice nobody in that house had ever heard from her.
